To Teach or Not to Teach? (NES, July 31, 2007).Teaching Experience and Preparation Among 1992-1993 Bachelor's Degree Recipients 10 Years After College. Using data from the 2003 Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study (B&B:93/03), this report profiles 1992-93 bachelor’s degree recipients’ experience with K-12 teaching in the subsequent 10 years, as well as their preparation for teaching. The report provides an overview of teachers’ job satisfaction and, for those not teaching in 2002-03, the main reason for not teaching. The second section looks at graduates’ preparation for teaching, including the key steps of completing a teacher education program, serving as a student teacher, and earning certification. Finally, the report examines the main reasons graduates who never taught gave for deciding against teaching. Report

This First Look report provides some selected findings from the 2004-05 Teacher Follow-up Survey (TFS) along with data tables and methodological information. The TFS is a follow-up of a sample of the elementary and secondary school teachers who participated in the previous year’s Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS).

What Do People Do After Earning an S&E Bachelor's Degree? (NSF InfoBrief 06-324, July 2006). The science and engineering (S&E) bachelor's degree is the gateway degree for most of those seeking more advanced S&E education. It is also the highest level of education attained by the majority of those performing R&D in the United States, and it provides a large body of workers in many different occupations and work activities with S&E knowledge. This InfoBrief uses data from the National Science Foundation's 2003 SESTAT surveys to examine various educational and workforce characteristics of individuals whose first university degree was in science and engineering. In fact, parents are less worried about this than they were in the mid-1990's.

The American public believes that high academic standards and testing in schools are necessary, but that those two measures alone are not sufficient to improve public education, a survey suggests. Barely Half of High-School Graduates Have College-Level Reading Skills, Report Says. (Chronicle of Higher Education, March 1, 2006). ONLY 51 PERCENT of last year's high-school graduates who took the ACT examination had the reading skills they needed to succeed in college or job-training programs, the lowest proportion in more than a decade, according to a report, Reading Between the Lines: What the ACT Reveals about College Readiness in Reading, released 3/1/06.

The Toolbox Revisited (U.S. Department of Education, February 2006) is a data essay that follows a nationally representative cohort of students from high school into postsecondary education, and asks what aspects of their formal schooling contribute to completing a bachelor's degree by their mid-20s. The universe of students is confined to those who attended a four-year college at any time, thus including students who started out in other types of institutions, particularly community colleges.

Ready for College and Ready for Work: Same or Different? (May 8, 2006, ACT.) High school students who plan to enter workforce training programs after they graduate need academic skills similar to those needed by students planning to enter college, according to a new study conducted by ACT. The findings suggest that the math and reading skills needed to be ready for success in workforce training programs are comparable to those needed for success in the first year of college. Report
